The replacement of a control system, on an otherwise mechanically sound piece of industrial equipment, machine tool, or specialty manufacturing and process equipment, is defined as a control system retrofit. Cost justification for a retrofit is found in productivity gains through automation, increases in production efficiency that follow a reduction in maintenance downtime, and the reduction of expenditures for maintenance parts that accompany continued use of obsolete control system components.
